May 7 – 21, 2010 | DANCER’S CAMERA | Bruce Monk Photographs

Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet and Mayberry Fine Art have partnered to present a unique exhibition and fundraising sale of iconic, black-and-white, ballet photographs shot and platinum printed by fine art photographer Bruce Monk, who is also an RWB School teacher and former Company dancer.

Entitled Dancer’s Camera, the May 7 – 21 exhibition at Mayberry Fine Art’s main gallery should prove to be the artistic exclamation point at the end of the RWB's 70th anniversary season and ushers in the 40th anniversary of the RWB School Professional Division. The two-week show and sale feature Monk's limited-edition, platinum prints of 17 on-stage and behind-the-scenes images, shot between 1987 and 2003.

This photographic portfolio of the RWB’s Professional Division, its graduates and the RWB Company spanning three decades, was specially selected and printed by Monk for this fundraising event. Monk’s images are exhibited internationally and are in the permanent collection of the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography. Platinum prints are appreciated by collectors because of their beauty, extended tonal range and unparalleled permanence.Professional Division.

About the Artist Bruce Monk, teacher, choreographer, photographer, has been creating fine art photography since 1987. His works are in many personal collections, exhibited internationally and are in the permanent collection of the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography. Bruce's work has been featured in campaigns for both Leica and Hasselblad cameras and used in films as diverse as "Vanilla Sky" and "Two For The Money".

Bruce is also a graduate of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School, a former dancer with the Company and has been teaching in the RWB School Professional Division for 23 years.

His interest in alternative printing originated while working part-time at a one-hour photo lab, seeing firsthand the short lifespan of contemporary photographic materials. This discovery led him to pursue printmaking processes that can withstand the test of time. After three years of study and a self directed photography course at OCA he produced a successful Platinum print and has been practicing the procedure since 1991.

The David Moroni School Endowment Fund Named after the Professional Division’s founding director, the David Moroni School Endowment Fund has been established to ensure the long term health and stability of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School Professional Division. Building this Endowment is one of the most important fundraising initiatives that the RWB School has undertaken. Once fully endowed, this fund will enable the RWB School to continue to cultivate the creative spirit of its young artists.

Gifts to the David Moroni School Endowment Fund, which can be pledged over a number of years, are eligible to be matched through the federal government’s Endowment Incentives Program, as well as a match from The Winnipeg Foundation thereby increasing the value and the significance of its impact on the School.
