BALLET
Ballet is a classical art form that teaches students the beauty of dance and movement. Students
develop the balance, poise, flexibility, strength and discipline required not just for
dance, but for everyday healthy living. Students studying other dance styles are encouraged
to take ballet in conjunction with their chosen dance discipline to help develop a strong
overall technique. All ballet classes are accompanied by professional pianists from the RWB
School music staff.
JAZZ
Jazz dancing was developed in the 1920s and has since evolved into today’s energetic, expressive
and rhythmical style. This powerful, dynamic class improves coordination, fl exibility
and muscle control as well as overall fi tness. Students in this fast-paced, challenging
and fun environment learn technique as well as dance combinations set to classical jazz and
current music.
MODERN
Modern dance is a structured discipline focusing on principles of tension and relaxation,
fall and recovery, suspension, contraction and release. Dancers will explore a wide range of
movement, increase their fl exibility and acquire keen body awareness. These classes will be
accompanied by a percussionist from the RWB School music staff.
MUSICAL THEATRE
Musical Theatre introduces students to a combination of theatre skills. Students learn basic
acting skills and develop their vocal abilities – both in combination with dance elements.
Students round out their performance skills by rehearsing and performing excerpts from
various musicals. It is strongly recommended that Musical Theatre students register for a
dance technique class in addition to their Musical Theatre class.
SPANISH
Spanish dance has a strong cultural background with a distinct sense of rhythm and pride.
Students will be introduced to all aspects of Spanish dance port de bras or Braceo, turns,
castanets and footwork techniques, providing them with a fun and challenging dance experience.
All students will be required to purchase castanets and female students will be
required to purchase a skirt.
PILATES
With an emphasis on breath, core conditioning and body awareness, Pilates is a perfect way
for dancers to stretch, strengthen and tone. The mat-based exercises will relieve stress and
tension, build muscle tone and endurance, and develop balance and coordination. Pilates
will complement your dance training while helping you attain a mind-body balance.
